Award: On successful completion, you will be issued with the nationally recognised Statement of Attainment – HLTAID004 Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting.
Description: During this course you will learn the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid to infants, children and adults. Australian Red Cross courses follow the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.

The unit applies to educators and support staff working within an education and care setting who are required to respond to a first aid emergency, including asthmatic and anaphylactic emergencies.

This unit of competency may contribute towards approved first aid, asthma and anaphylaxis training under the Education and Care Services National Law, and the Education and Care Services National Regulations (2011).

This course is approved by ACECQA for First Aid, Asthma and Anaphylaxis Management training.

Note: It is a requirement of this course that practical demonstration of CPR must be performed on the adult manikin on the floor.

Recertification: Current industry standard is for this course to be updated every 3 years with the CPR component being updated annually

- Basic life support (DRSABCD)
- CPR and AED
- Abdominal injuries
- Allergic reaction
- Anaphylaxis, signs and triggers
- Asthma, signs and triggers and bronchodilators
- Bleeding and wound care
- Burns and scalds
- Cardiac conditions
- Choking and airway obstruction
- Crush injuries
- Diabetes
- Drowning
- Envenomation
- Extremes of heat and cold
- Eye and ear injuries
- Musculoskeletal injuries: fractures and dislocations, strains and sprains
- Needle stick injuries
- Poisoning and toxic subtances
- Respiratory distress
- Seizures/convulsions
- Shock management
- Stroke
- Unconsciousness
Duration: 2 days - face to face
Assessment Method: Competency based and includes demonstration of practical skills, role playing and a quiz.
Prerequisite: There are no prerequisites for this course
